The ETM programme consists of two years, each divided into four quarters. The programme involves three different educational activities: projects, courses and activities in professional skills & coaching.
First semester
The first semester focuses on basic skills (chemistry, English, Dutch) and an introduction to several environmental subjects (environmental sciences, occupational health, environmental biology, water management, soil pollution). This semester ensures that you have the same basic knowledge as the Dutch students with whom you will be working in the second semester.
Minors
In the second and third semesters there are two minors. Here you will be joined by the Dutch students of Environmental Sciences. You will work together with them at varying levels (sometimes mixed project groups, sometimes only mixed lessons or workshops).
Environmental Consultancy focuses on common problems faced in the day-to-day work of environmental engineers, such as soil remediation, water treatment, environment and health, environmental law and air pollution. The assignments for these projects will also focus on consultancy skills: all solutions need to be presented within a professional context. To do this you will need tools such as Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and English writing and presentation skills, which also form part of the minor programme.
The Sustainable Energy minor addresses the most important problem for a sustainable environment today: solving the energy problem. There are courses and projects related to sustainable development, sustainable energy sources, energy conversion and society & technology. The projects and lectures are developed in close cooperation with our Sustainable Energy research group.
Work placements
The fourth semester consists of a work placement, during which you will work on an individual assignment to demonstrate your ability to function as an environmental scientist. The assignment must meet criteria in areas such as creativity and multidisciplinary working.
Prior education
Two years of study in this field in higher education
English language
IELTS score of at least 6.0 [or TOEFL 550 or higher]
Intake interview
Positive recommendation based on personal interview
Several environmental master’s degree programmes are available at Dutch Universities, e.g. at Wageningen University (wide range of environmental master’s degree programmes) and Eindhoven University of Technology (Sustainable Energy Technologies).
Career opportunities are excellent on completing the Environmental Technology and Management programme:
• Government agencies: development and implementation of environmental policies
• Industry: EHS positions
• Consultancies: consultation ranging from technical solutions to environmental licensing to policy making
