Before you can start planning your trip to the Netherlands you will need to make sure that you have completed all the necessary formalities.
Deadlines
Keep in mind that deadlines apply. If you don't meet the given deadlines we cannot offer you any guarantees.
Use the checklist below to see if you have made all necessary arrangements.
1. Enrol
There are two ways to enrol, through the studielink website or using an application form. Read all about the application procedure.
2. Send required documents
In addition to the application procedure you must also send all required documents to Avans University of Applied Sciences.
Documents to be sent by (Erasmus) exchange students and minor students.
Documents to be sent by bachelor's students, double degree students, prep course students and master's students.
3. Arrange financial matters
Tuition fees
Tuition fees should be paid as soon as you arrive in the Netherlands. Check all information about Tuition fees.
Living expenses
Make sure you have sufficient financial means when you come to the Netherlands. Check the living expenses before you plan your trip.
Credit card
In order to pay your rent or load credit onto your Avans facilitycard, we recommend that you bring with you an international credit card.
4. Arrange health insurance
Everyone living in the Netherlands is obliged to have a type of insurance called ‘basisverzekering’, which is a basic health insurance policy. This has consequences for people from abroad, whose residence in the Netherlands is temporary. Check all information about health insurance.
5. Arrange accommodation
Make sure you have made arrangements for accommodation in the Netherlands. You can either make your own individual arrangements or you can make use of the option to arrange accommodation through Avans. Read more about accommodation.
6. Arrange visa and residence permit
Students from countries outside the European Union (with the exception of students from Australia, Canada, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, the United States of America and Vatican City State) who wish to reside in the Netherlands for a period exceeding three months, must hold a visa prior to their departure to the Netherlands. Read all information about visas .
All non-EU students also need to apply for a residence permit in the first week after arrival. Avans International Office will help you to make the necessary arrangements. Please check beforehand which documents and financial means you need in order to obtain a residence permit.
You should also check the website of the Dutch national government for immigrants (New to Holland). This website provides you with a useful checklist of the formalities you need to complete when you come to study in the Netherlands.
7. Leaving the Netherlands
After finishing your studies and leaving this city or even the Netherlands, please do not forget to do the following:
- Inform City Hall about your departure and de-register.
- Close your Dutch bank account and leave details of your foreign bank account (number, address, IBAN and SWIFT code) with the International Office into which we can transfer any refunds due (if applicable).
